Gary Pelletier is the head custodian at Sunset Ridge School. Working for East Hartford Public Schools for 6 years, he says it’s the best job he’s ever had.

“I love my job,” said Pelletier. “I’ve worked in factories, you know, driven trucks for like 11 years. Out of the handful of jobs that I’ve had, this will be my last stop. I think I’m here for a reason.”

From picking up trash outside to chasing spills inside, there’s always something for him to do.

“I try to make the school better than what it was yesterday,” said Pelletier.

Sunset Ridge Principal Daniel Catlin said Pelletier is always on top of his daily tasks, but it’s the extra tasks he takes on that make him such an asset to the school community.

“Gary treats the school like it’s his home,” said Catlin.

For example, when students were learning remotely last year, Pelletier decided to lead his team in painting the hallways throughout the building.

“Everybody was home and there was nobody here watching. He could have sat around, but he was like, ‘No, I’m going to start painting the school,’” said Catlin. “It really transformed this place.”

Pelletier said, “I just like to take care of my responsibilities and then maybe go a little extra to keep my Sunset Ridge family happy.”
