East Hartford Public Schools recognized Hispanic Heritage Month in a variety of ways this year celebrating the rich histories, art, stories, and cultural contributions of those whose ancestry can be traced back to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15

Inside the classroom our teachers read stories in Spanish and participated in geography activities on Latin American countries. At Mayberry Elementary, the morning announcements included facts about a different influential Hispanic American each day. At Langford Elementary School, 4th grade students co-planned a classroom celebration, which included research and texts focused on Hispanic foods and culture.

East Hartford High School enjoyed its annual Café con Leche event where students complete activities including cultural crafts, dance lessons and singing then enjoy a celebration of Hispanic food.

Connecticut IB Academy held a schoolwide assembly celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month organized by world language students. One highlight of the assembly was a Bachata performance.

Celebrating this month is especially important in East Hartford where more than 53% of our students identify as Hispanic or Latinx. We appreciate this opportunity to recognize and honor the many cultures of our students and families both inside and outside the classroom.
