After their student teacher cheered them on all year long, 5th graders from Mayberry Elementary School had the opportunity to return the favor. Amanda MacDonald’s 5th grade class worked with Olivia Heslin, a student teacher from University of Saint Joseph (USJ), throughout the first semester of this school year. As students connected with her and got to know her more, they learned basketball was a big part of her life and she is the captain of USJ’s team. On January 10, they visited USJ in person to see her play.
“The opportunity for Mayberry school students to attend the University of Saint Joe’s women’s game and cheer on their hero, Miss Heslin, was an invaluable opportunity for students to connect school, community, and family,” said Principal Joseph LeRoy.
Prior to the game, students had the opportunity to tour the athletic facility and campus, were gifted a “swag bag” and were able to connect with players and staff.
Davien W. said, “It was so nice to have a great experience to see what college was like even at a young age.”
When it was time for the game, Principal LeRoy said the students “maintained an energy and vibe that resembled one of Duke basketball and Cameron Indoor Stadium.” They made signs to support the team and cheered until the final buzzer.
“We had so much fun watching Miss Heslin play. Me and my friends cheered so much!” said Meher M.
As a partner school with USJ, the Mayberry team works to create these meaningful and lasting connections.
Teacher Amanda MacDonald said, “[Miss Heslin] has had such a positive impact on our school community, and my class is beyond grateful for the experiences they have had with her in the classroom and at the game.”
“For me, this experience was everything I envision education to be about: satisfaction, enjoyment, and the value of memories,” said Heslin. “A lot of people think teachers always have a huge impact on their students. In my eyes, it is completely the other way around."
